Activities, Sports & Things to Do
The natural beauty of the countryside in this area makes it ideal for outdoor activities.

There is a wide range of outdoor activities to choose from. For children, Rockcliffe provides a safe swimming beach, rock pools and islands to explore. Riding lessons can be organised with the stables at Barend in Sandyhills. There is sailing and canoeing at Kippford, or directly from Rockcliffe beach.

A holiday at Mossdale includes free golf at nearby Colvend Golf Course for up to four adults per day, and there is a choice of other golf courses and links within a short drive from Rockcliffe.

The area is a paradise for ornithologists and nature lovers; nearby there is the RSPB Mersehead reserve, and at Caerlaverock by Dumfries there is the Wetlands Trust Reserve.

The 7 Stanes mountain bike trail is 5 miles from the house, and there is direct access to Dalbeattie forest trails 400 metres from the house. There are also excellent mountain bike trails in nearby Mabie Forest.

There is a good range of coastal, hill and forest walks that can be made directly from the house. For those looking for more challenging hill walks, Screel, Criffel, the Galloway Hills, the Glenkens and the Southern Upland Way are all within range for a day’s outing.

There are thriving local arts and crafts, an art gallery at the Baron’s Craig in Rockcliffe village and creative pottery designs at the Barnbarroch Pottery.

The high quality of local farm produce available at local shops also means that you can enjoy good Scottish cuisine either at home or at some of the nearby restaurants and bars. We in particular recommend Mr TH Carson in Dalbeattie as providing some of the best beef and lamb you will find anywhere in the world, and cheeses from the Loch Arthur Farm Shop in Beeswing.
